Of the total arrears of Crown Rents out-
standing in 31st December, 1993, referred to in paragraph
5 of the Local Auditor's report, certain sums, amounting
in the aggregate to $543.79, being rents for the half-year
ended 25th December, 1892, paid to but not accounted for
by the late Treasury Clerk Alves, were written off as
irrecoverable, in accordance with the authority of the
Secretary of State, conveyed to my Department in Mr Fair-
field's letter of the 8th March last.
The serious defalcations committed in the
Colonial Treasury by Treasury Clerk Alves, which were
brought to light in February, 1893, together with the
circumstances attending their committal and discovery, have
formed the subiect of a separate correspondence.

Expenditure.
The total Expenditure of $1.920,524, was

more than the total Estimate by $21,149, but less than the
Expenditure of 1892 by $422,313.
